* In 2004

- Asian production shot up by nearly 50% or 7.9M units comparing to year 1998, while the global production rose by only 20%
- Production growth of 8.7% or 1.88M units over 2003
- Total regional production of 23.4M units or 36% of global production, production in Japan

- Production growth of 7.4% or 1.73M units over 2004
- China represents 33% of regional growth in production
- Korea posted an impressive growth  by 40% from strong export
- Disappointed production growth in India due to lacking of clarity and coherency in policy making

Key main production hubs in the region

Key main production hubs in the region

* Japan

- Production output from Japan remains stable at over 10 million units
- Demand for Japanese brand is still very strong  but the  main production expansion continue to increase in overseas productions

 * China

- Production growth in China is still mainly to support  the domestic growth, potential export from China is a big question mark, although Chinese companies are eyeing opportunities also in other more developed markets
- Continue investment
- Medium term the growth is expected to be more than 10% progressive slowdown from 2009 onward to around 3%

* Korea

- Main growth engine of surging vehicle production for export markets especially to Europe
- Acquisition of  Samsung Renault and of Daewoo by GM will boost the global status and network of  Korea brand in overseas markets
- Production output from Korea expected to be stable at 4 million units mark
- Like the Japanese brands, demand for Korean brand is still very strong but the main production expansion continue to increase  in overseas productions

* ASEAN (Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia)

- Thailand, continue capacity expansion for export markets , current 2005 out put is at 1M units, and the target in 2010 is 1.8M units
- Indonesia, mainly to serve domestic sales, current 2005 output is at 560K units, and will grow to 800K units by 2010
- Malaysia, mainly to serve domestic sales, current 2005 output is at 530K units, and will grow to 700K units by 2010

 * India

- Steady increase in production levels in line with the growth in domestic sales and exports
- India will remain a highly competitive source of components and engineering services
- Current 2005 output is at 1.6M units, and will grow to 2.9M units by 2010
